UAE Looks Beyond Rafale for Jet Purchase

Sep 13 2010 Published by under 2010 Elections

The United Arab Emirates has requested information on the Boeing F-18 fighter jet, despite having been engaged in advanced talks with France for an anticipated $10 billion purchase of Dassault Rafales. The UAE deal, which would have been the Rafale’s first export order, was considered to be a sure thing for the French defense contractor.

Hot Post: Why Johnny’s So Pissed Off

Sep 12 2010 Published by under 2010 Elections

This post was first published here… Americans have heard an awful lot over the years about why Johnny can’t read, but we rarely hear about why Johnny’s so pissed off — for the obvious reason, of course: the topic is off-limits. Addressing the reasons why kids today are struggling emotionally means parents might have to take a good look at what they’re doing wrong. And that’s no fun for anyone. Yet address it we must. Angry kids have become a bona fide statistic in America — not an anomaly, as in years past. In September 2009, Wall Street Journal ‘s work and family columnist Sue Shellenbarger wrote that 29 states in America — along with a few cities — now offer mental health services to our nation’s three and four-year-olds. From 9.5% to 14.2% of children under 6 have emotional problems serious enough to hurt their ability to function, including anxiety or behavioral disorders,” writes Shellenbarger. Another study by the Archives of General Psychiatry found depression in children “as young as 3.” Lynn Hopson, executive director of a New Haven, CT preschool says, We’re seeing more and more children with challenging behaviors every year. This problem doesn’t end in preschool. Thousands of elementary and middle schools throughout the United States have now been trained to use the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, a program developed by Dan Olweus. His program has been recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics, along with Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence and other prominent organizations. Which leaves us with an obvious question: Why are today’s children acting out to such a degree and even in need of mental health services? There are only three possible answers to this question: Some children are born this way; excessive exposure to media and technology has made children this way; or bad parenting. As to the first possibility: You can certainly find research that suggests people are “born bad” (for lack of a better phrase) — in 2007, for example, Scientific American highlighted research that indicates some babies are born with violent tendencies — but reason and common sense prove otherwise. For one thing, if some kids are born bad, why the tremendous rise of babies born with natural aggression? Is it something modern mothers are eating? Moreover, prisons are filled with adults with disastrous childhoods. If some children are born with a propensity toward anger and aggression, why don’t half the folks in prisons have lovely parents?

Donald Trump Puts His Money Where His Mouth Is When It Comes To The Ground Zero Mosque

Sep 10 2010 Published by under 2010 Elections

Who would’ve thought of the possibility that the next American hero would come riding up to save the day in a stretch limousine, armed with a wall of hair and a massive checkbook? It almost happened Thursday, as Donald Trump made a $6 million dollar effort to purchase the site of the proposed Ground Zero Mosque . When I saw the crawl on Fox News Thursday, I couldn’t believe my eyes, but other sources confirm: in a letter sent to Hisham Elzanaty , who claims to have a majority ownership stake in the site, The Donald made an offer to buy the Park Place property . He’s offering $6 million, or 25% more than Elzanaty reportedly paid for the site. Trump said: I am making this offer as a resident of New York and a citizen of the United States, not because I think the location is a spectacular one (because it is not), but because it will end a very serious, inflammatory and highly divisive situation that is destined, in my opinion, to only get worse. Trump’s attempt to put his (considerable) money where his (even more considerable) mouth is was impressive, but apparently not to Elzanaty, who rejected the offer almost immediately. His lawyer explained: Is he a savior now? Donald Trump? I don’t know anything that he saved before. He’s just trying to recapture the limelight and get into a situation that he doesn’t really know anything about. This is not a serious offer, and frankly Mr. Elzanaty is sort of disappointed, because he considers this an insult to him. Elzanaty is holding out for $20 million , and he won’t settle for less. Trump appeared on CNBC Friday morning and referred to Elzanaty as a “low level real estate guy without any money…looking to flip” the property. Trump, who considers himself a “big believer in freedom of religion,” made his offer for one reason, which happens to be a reason shared by 70% of the American people: he thinks a mosque located mere blocks from Ground Zero is a bad idea.

South Korea, U.S. Trained for Stabilizing North Korea

Sep 10 2010 Published by under 2010 Elections

South Korea and the United States held training exercises to simulate a military response to various types of instability within North Korea. The drills were carried out last month in the most recent Ulchi Freedom Guardian computer simulation. The South Korean Unification Ministry — tasked with working toward the reunification of Korea — participated in the drill for the first time. Some of the scenarios in the drill included a regime collapse, an influx of North Korean refugees in the South and civil war.

Female Empowerment, Leftist Style, Is a Dead-End Road

Sep 09 2010 Published by under 2010 Elections, Senate

This month marks the 1st annual WIE Symposium, or women’s conference, in New York. WIE stands for Women: Inspiration & Enterprise. In a full-page Wall Street Journal ad, the WIE conference is billed as “dynamic” and calls “all women who want to make a difference.” Young women can meet their “role models, connect with peers, and network with noted exceptional women leaders.”  The conference boasts an impressive list of recognizable names — mostly from the fashion industry and mainstream media, since those are the names young women know most about. If I were easily impressed (and younger), I might be tempted to pick up the phone and make a plane reservation. (Fortunately, I’ll be attending another conference — one that’s focused on how to take back America from the WIE women.) What’s glaring about this women’s conference is that it isn’t billed as a liberal conference. In fact, there are no political words at all — implying that powerful women are, for the most part, left-wing. There are no conservative women on the list, with the exception of Dana Perino — who’s probably the token conservative so the leaders of WIE can say, “See? We’re diverse!” (Reminds me of the new book Secrets of Powerful Women , which tells the stories of roughly 20 women in politics — but only a small fraction are Republican. And not just any Republican — pro-choice Republicans.) Of course anyone is entitled to organize a conference, but the last thing today’s young women need is more guidance from women on the left. This group — via academia, the media, and Hollywood — have done enough damage to the modern generation. Left-wing women, a.k.a. feminists, have brought American women nothing but misery by teaching them that America is a patriarchal society and that women are discriminated against at every turn. To hear the media tell it, the only women who have made something of their lives are leftists who “broke through the glass ceiling” for the rest of us. But as Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard (who started out as a secretary) and 2010 Republican nominee for the United States Senate, said: “What glass ceiling?” This is not the message young women are used to hearing. Rather, they’re besieged with “feminist” lingo via a relentless focus on women’s empowerment (beginning in college), girls’ self-esteem, and women’s needs in general. The Oprah Show is almost entirely devoted to women and their issues, as is We television for women and, of course, the Lifetime channel — which might as well be titled “All Men Are Wife Beaters and Neanderthals.”
